Statement by the U.S. Mission to the African Union on the Killing of George Floyd

The U.S. Mission to the African Union joins with the people of the United States, Africa, and the world in condemning the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, MN on May 25, 2020.

The officer involved in Mr. Floyd’s death has been arrested for murder and manslaughter and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota, the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are conducting a criminal investigation.  As noted in their May 28 statement, the Department of Justice has made the investigation a top priority.

This incident has justifiably stoked international outrage.  We offer our deepest condolences and prayers to the family and friends of Mr. Floyd, and to all African Americans and others in the United States who have been and continue to be on the receiving end of racist behavior.  Though the U.S. continues to struggle with the historic and problematic intersection of race and justice, we are committed to upholding our country’s highest ideals of equality, and human dignity for all.
