Mission Statement
The goal of the United States Mission to the African Union (USAU) is to forge a strategic partnership with the African Union that will further peace, stability and prosperity throughout Africa. This is a partnership developed through historic ties, shared culture, globalization and a deep appreciation of the strategic significance of the African continent.
USAU is committed to engaging with our colleagues in the African Union to strengthen democratic institutions, promote peace and stability, support sustainable economic development through increased trade and investment, and improve the lives and health of all Africans.
To this end, USAU is pursuing a program focused on the following objectives that both we and the AU recognize as vital to the future:
- Governing Justly and Democratically
- Investing in People
- Promoting Peace and Stability
Cindy L. Courville was sworn in as the Representative of the United States of America to the African Union, with the Rank and Status of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, on December 22, 2006. The United States is the first country outside of Africa to open a dedicated mission to the African Union.
The staff of the U.S. Mission to the African Union includes representatives from the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Agency for International Development , the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Defense
